History Ostler's Cider Mill is located deep in the lush North Devon countryside close to Exmoor, in an area where we are able to trace our farming ancestors back to the 1530's.
Cider has been made here to Traditional methods for centuries and we are reviving a rural craft of making Natural Cider Vinegar and Apple Blossom Honey. | |
| The ancient ritual of wassailing | |
| This ancient ritual has been performed by the Exmoor Border Morris Men, with its aim to increase fertility of the apple trees. Wassail songs are sung and toast is put into the oldest or most fertile tree, cider is then poured over its roots and a shotgun is fired into the air, making a lot of noise to ward off any evil spirits.
This is a folklore idea that robins will feed on the bread and come back in the year to eat the grubs. |
